Eeek! Leaks!!
The leak in my
shower went on for
over a year. It started
when I had tetanus,
so I hardly could take
a shower anyway.
But it leaked all the
time and the noise
was beginning to
drive me crazy.
The
real problem
,
however,
was the
mold behind the tiles.
Getting the leak fixed had been a saga.

I didn't have any money due to my rental being 'incapacitated' by my
tenants leaving early and the boiler burning out when the water was off but
the electric and gas weren't.

I tried to get charities to help and St. Vincent de Paul said they would, so I
called the plumbers who had given me the estimate on the boiler.

They sent over a young fellow who began by fixing
a leak that had begun to
run
in my bathtub. Only he said he didn't have the right size part.

He never came back the way he said he would, and the plumbing
management said the leak hadn't stopped because my house was so old
, not
because of any wrong sized part
.

When the water
again began to leak so badly it was running, a Realtor lent
me the money to hire his handyman to fix it.
That was wonderful! (When I
sold m
y rental with the burned out boiler (I'd given a credit to replace the
boiler) I repaid the Realtor.

A bit after that I thought I heard water running again, in the bath, so I went
in and was going to see if the water was shut off all the way (even though I
hadn't touched the handles since the repair because of how I could still not
bend wel
l enough (from having had tetanus) to take a bath. I touched the
handle, and it flew off with the force of water shooting straight from the
mains.
Intense water!

I grabbed things from my linen closet and threw them on the floor to absorb
the water, but I soon realized there was way too much water for a few
sheets and quilts to absorb, so I began emptying my linen closet into the
doorway, to dike back the water.
October 11, 2009 - For some reason I stopped telling the leaks story.

I thought I'd shown the leak in the pipe to my hot water heater... but
apparently not.

In any case, since I've had solar I haven't used my hot water heater, and
now it seems as if the water from my kitchen sink tastes a little like algae, so
I'm thinking of getting the hot water heater removed. But... I had questions
about the plumbing, so I took the picture below:

It shows the grey
pipe coming in
with water from
the mains. The
handle close to the
wall, behind the
pipe, wasn't
operative, so I had
the black lever
added and it
works great.

Up until today I
didn't realize that
the mains water
formed a T at the
pipe going both
into the wall and
into the water
heater...
