April 3, 2010 - I found a rather downy, newly-woven-looking and lovely,
wind-downed bird's nest under my ponderosa. I wished I had a birdhouse
to put it in, in hopes that the
creative bird who made it
would find it and be able
to use it as planned.

I don't know what kind of
bird makes such a dainty
nest, but it must be a
small bird.

I decided to see if I had
a basket that could be
a birdhouse.

Of the two most promising
baskets, I chose the taller,
round one... and began to
wonder how to cover the opening so it wouldn't be so large...

The curly topped grass looked
like it might attract the bird that
had woven the nest, so I threaded
grass across a little more than half
of the opening, added some pine
needles for opacity and a wiry
twig to reinforce the top, if birds
landed on the grass on the way
into their home. Hopefully
some birds will use the little
"house" as a home. (There is a nest in a neighboring ponderosa that birds
have used for years... all different birds have used it in turn.)

I've placed the basket birdhouse
in one of my pear trees, using
two branches to clamp around it
for stability, and twine to tie
it so that, hopefully,  the wind
won't dislodge it.

It's not high up in the tree, so
I'm not sure a bird will like it.

Also, I walk past the pear every
day when I walk in my garden...
so I hope that isn't too distracting.

Now... I wait to see if a bird decides to make it a home.
May 25, 2010 - There is a mother bird (presumably) sitting in the basket
birdhouse that's nestled in the now, nicely leafed-out pear tree. I'm SO
happy.
