Milk Thistle -- good for detoxing the liver.

(Silybum marianum Gaertn), is a member of the family
Asteraceae. Also known as the Marian, St. Mary's, and
Our Lady's thistle, Milk Thistle should not be confused
with the blessed or holy thistle (Cnicus benedictus), an
entirely different species.

Milk Thistle is a tall herb with prickly leaves and a milky
sap that is native to the Mediterranean region of Europe.
Milk thistle is among the most ancient of all known herbal
medicines, having been used as a folk remedy for centuries
for liver complaints. Recent research has demonstrated that
extracts of milk thistle do indeed protect against some very
nasty liver toxins.

Research has uncovered a host of antihepatotoxic (liver
protectant) compounds commonly referred to as silymarin.
Silymarin has been shown to consist of a large number of
flavonolignans, including silybin, isosilybin, dehydrosilybin,
silydianin and silychristin. Animal studies have shown that
silymarin exerts a liver protective effect against a variety of
toxins, including the phallo toxins of the deadly Amanita
phalloides mushroom.

Amanita phalloides is one of the most poisonous
mushrooms in the world, containing toxins that are
particularly destructive to the liver. Ingestion of this
mushroom can lead to severe liver damage and death if
untreated. The active ingredient of the herb is a
bioflavonoid mixture called silymarin, the principal
component of which is silybin. In animal experiments,
when silymarin was given before poisoning by the Amanita
phalloides mushroom, it was found to be 100 percent
effective in preventing liver damage. Silymarin was also
found to be completely effective if given to animals within
ten minutes of exposure to the poison. When given within
twenty-four hours it still prevented death and greatly
reduced the amount of liver damage.

Silymarin also confers protection against the liver damage
from dangerous solvents such as carbon tetrachloride and
ethanol (alcohol). Silymarin has been used in the treatment
of hepatic disorders in humans, and a German medical
study found that liver function in patients with chronic
hepatitis improved after three months of therapy with
silymarin. A later study reported on the use of 420
milligrams of silymarin daily in patients with cirrhosis of
the liver. Of twenty followed up for six to thirty-six
months, ten were definitely improved and four had
deteriorated.

The results of numerous studies suggest that silymarin not
only protects liver cells by preventing the actions of toxic
substances but that it also stimulate protein synthesis to
accelerate the regeneration and production of liver cells.

Silymarin and component silybin function as antioxidants,
protecting cell membranes from free-radical-mediated
oxidative damage. This type of damage is known as lipid
peroxidation. Most liver toxins produce their damaging
effects by free radical mechanisms. Both silymarin and
silybin protect red blood cell membranes against lipid
peroxidation and hemolysis (breaking down of the red
blood cells) caused by certain red blood cell poisons.

You should start out slow with it because it releases toxins
from your liver; the effect can be intense if there are many
toxins. So don’t take more than one of them a day for the
first two weeks. (I had two weeks where I felt as if my
mind had turned to cement; it was quite worrying.)
Alpha lipoic acid -- a “vitamin-like compound with
antioxidant properties. It promotes healthy cell function and
may provide protective benefits against oxidative processes
believed to contribute to degenerative diseases and aging…
ALA has been called the "universal" antioxidant. Besides
neutralizing unstable free radical molecules in the body,
ALA may boost glutathione (one of the body's most
powerful antioxidants) levels in cells.”

Alpha Lipoic Acid … has been used in Europe to restore
liver health, ease diabetes-related neuropathy, and confer
protective benefits against oxidative processes involved in
degenerative diseases and premature aging. Alpha-Lipoic
Acid (ALA), also called thioctic acid, is more potent than
vitamins C, E and Co-Q10, and, according to Dr. Lester
Packer, Professor of Molecular Biology at U.C. Berkeley,
may be the most important antioxidant ever discovered.
"The therapeutic potential of alpha-lipoic acid is just
beginning to be explored," observed Packer.
Magnesium -- "a mineral needed by every cell of your
body. It helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function,
keeps heart rhythm steady, and bones strong. In addition
it is often called an anti-stress mineral as it has a calming
effect and can assist in inducing restful sleep... Among its
other benefits, magnesium is a natural antihistamine."

I am concentrating on taking magnesium several times a
day. That's because I was shocked when the periodontist
told me that I have an infection around my dental
implants that is eating away the bone and that all the
Ibuprofen I took weakened the bone. (I've stopped taking
ANY pain killer unless the pain is just impossible to
handle.)

The thing is, since I've been taking these added
supplements I haven't been as sick. (The periodontist said
the infection was making me feel sick. I was feeling sick
quite a lot, and losing hair.)

I read recently that magnesium needs stomach acid in
order to be freed from food for use by our bodies... so I
bet many people who are low on B12 are also low on
magnesium.
Whey protein improves the growth of bifidobacteria and is
rich in amino acids that raise the biological efficiency of the
protein. Note: Bifidobacteria are associated with a lower
incidence of allergies (Bjorkstein et al., 2004) and also
prevent some forms of tumor growth (Guarner and
Malagelada, 2003).
R-lipoic acid (RLA) is the naturally-occurring form of
lipoic acid, a nutrient present in every cell of the body,
essential to chemical reactions which allow the body to
produce energy. The "R" form is considered the biologically
active form, identical to that produced by the body.

RLA plays a crucial role in metabolism and energy
production and functions as a potent antioxidant to protect
healthy cells from the damaging effects of free radicals.
Besides protecting membranes, mitochondria (the
energy-producing structures within cells) and cellular DNA,
RLA work synergistically with vitamins C and E and
Coenzyme Q10.

Because it's both fat and water soluble, lipoic acid can
neutralize free radicals in both the fatty and watery regions
of cells (unlike vitamin C, which is only water soluble, and
vitamin E, which is fat soluble). RLA is also able to cross
the blood-brain barrier, which enables it to benefit both
brain cells (neurons) and cells throughout the body.

Lipoic acid may increase levels of glutathione in the body.
Glutathione is an antioxidant that plays an important role in
protecting the brain as well as visual health. It promotes
healthy blood glucose levels and by speeding removal of
glucose from the bloodstream (by enhancing insulin
function), lipoic acid may help reduce glucose tolerance and
decrease insulin resistance. It may also restore glucose
availability in tissues such as the skeletal muscle.
Trimethylglycine (TMG)(betaine HCl) -- may promote
healthy homocysteine levels and improve liver function.
Additionally, it often alleviates the symptoms of heartburn,
and supports digestion in people with hypochlorhydria
(low stomach acid).

Symptoms of low stomach acid include stomach bloating,
burping, upset stomach, burning, flatulence,
diarrhea,
nausea from supplements, rectal itching, weak, peeling/
cracked fingernails, dilated capillaries in cheeks/nose (in
non-alcoholics), post adolescent Acne, iron deficiency,
other mineral deficiencies, chronic intestinal infection,
undigested food in stool, ridges/lines on fingernails, pins
and needles sensation in feet or hands.

I've included the Nature's Plus kind, with fewer capsules,
because it's a lower cost.

A few years ago I was living on $11 a week, so I know
how hard it is to get the things you need when there just is
not enough money. Sometimes a few of something less
costly is better than nothing at all.

In terms of HCL (Hydrochloric Acid) I think it's very
important. I've begun taking it with Methylcobalamin
sublinguals and swallowing the sublinguals. I'm doing this
because I was having so much trouble with tooth decay
which I think was from taking so many sublinguals. (I
need to take 6 a day to equal one B12 shot.) I can't be
positive yet, but I think this is working. I had horrible pins
and needles and a spongy feeling when I was walking
yesterday, but today -- this is two swallowed
Methylcobalamin tabs taken with HCL later -- my feet are
feeling a lot better. My toes are still stiff, but maybe that
will get better, too. (There's just been so much stress
lately.)

Note: If you have symptoms of hypochlorhydria, but also
have peptic ulcers or gastritis, or are taking NSAIDS, then
taking hydrocholoric acid is not recommended.
Vitamin C -- also known as ascorbic acid, is necessary for
normal growth and body maintenance. It plays a part in the
development and repair of all bodily tissues and is crucial
for healing wounds and repairing cartilage, bones and teeth.
Vitamin C is involved in the production of collagen, used to
make skin, ligaments, tendons and blood vessels.

Vitamin C is one of nature's most powerful antioxidants,
working to protect the body from harmful free radical
molecules which may contribute to both aging and disease.
It's found in some concentration in all fruits and vegetables,
but citrus fruits, strawberries, cantaloupe, tomatoes,
broccoli, potatoes and leafy greens are the best sources.

As a water-soluble vitamin, vitamin C is not stored in the
body and must be regularly replaced through diet or
supplementation (the body cannot make it on its own).
Deficiency is rare, but smoking, stress and certain illnesses
can cause reduced levels.

Supplementing with vitamin C is well-known to help
strengthen the immune system. One study, published in the
Journal of the American College of Nutrition, found that
high-doses (1,000 mg to 6,000 mg) of vitamin C were able
to reduce the severity and duration of common-cold
symptoms (when taken at onset) by up to 21 percent. The
immune-boosting effects of vitamin C may also be helpful
for fatigue/metabolism, wound/infection healing and allergy
issues.

Vitamin C's antioxidant properties may account for its
heart-health benefits. Research shows that vitamin C, when
taken with vitamin E (also an important antioxidant), can
help prevent oxidation of LDL ("bad") cholesterol, which
contributes to plaque buildup in coronary arteries. It may
also help with the maintenance of healthy blood pressure
levels.

Vitamin C will get rid of infection, but take it early in the
day so that it's easier to stay in the bathroom. That's
because in the amounts needed to wipe out a serious
infection it causes the next thing to diarrhea.

I took 30 grams a day for 5 days and it pretty much wiped
out the infection under my gums from the old dental
implants I have. 30 grams is 30 1,000mg tablets. But as I
say, I had to spend extra time in the bathroom. Worth it,
though.

I took 15 of the 500mg in the morning, probably around 10
a.m., with a few crackers. Then another 15 at lunch with
food; food decreases the impact on the digestive system. 15
in the afternoon, and the last 15 with dinner around 5pm.
But, as I say, I'm really big.
I'm really tall and heavy, so don't take that much unless
you're 6 feet and over 250 pounds like me.

(As an aside, stress makes the infection come back.)
Whey -- Albumin is of particular interest to researchers
because of its elevated concentrations of glutamylcysteine,
a percursor to the antioxidant glutathione. It supports
muscle development because its one of the richest natural
sources of BCAAs - a combination of (Isoleucine, Leucine
and Valine) important fuel component of muscle tissue.
Glycomacropeptides - improve digestion and nutrient
absorption.
Once I started taking Whey a huge bed sore that I had
began to resolve, the terrible pain that I got in the
muscles/nerves most affected by the tetanus became less
frequent and the abscess feeling from the dental infection
in my jaw happened less and didn't make me as sick. So
my feeling is that this helps my body actually heal, because
of the amino acids which are said to be "building blocks."

I get both the Vanilla and Chocolate and use a mixture of
the two in my coffee. I have three or four mugs a day. (As
someone with type A blood, coffee is beneficial for me,
and I love it. I always have it with Creamer, the cheap kind
from Wal*Mart because it didn't have any aluminum in it
-- I haven't read the label in a long time so I can't
absolutely say that it still doesn't have aluminum in it.) The
Whey has a bit of a bitter aftertaste, especially the vanilla.
When I add Chocolate Whey the aftertaste is so like the
taste of chocolate that it's hardly noticeable. I also add a
generous sprinkle of cinnamon. Cinnamon is supposed to
be helpful against depression.  : )  Whether it is or not, I
don't know, I just know that I've been feeling MUCH
better since I've been having the Whey.

I've begun a page on pain with some pictures to show what
the parts of our bodies that produce pain look like.
Interestingly enough, a protein was recently discovered
which is needed to repair the myelin sheath part of our
nerves. I put a large gold star in the margin by this part of
the information so you can easily find it. Take a look at my
page on pain.

9/11/08 - I've just switched to NSI Whey ISO Protein
powder. It contains one pound more than the Jarrow
formula - but you are supposed to use three rather than one
scoop. So, I thought I'd compare the protein provided. See
chart below. I thought the comparisons were very
interesting!

Gosh, the comparison is interesting. NSI suggests three scoops, when apparently each scoop has
about as much protein in it as the Jarrow. I was curious how goat, rice, egg and hemp protein
compared so I added rice and hemp to the chart. The rice protein is less expensive - I may try it
next time.
